Celebrating Juneteenth

Dear Colleagues,

Tomorrow we observe Juneteenth — a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and honors the resilience, contributions, and enduring legacy of Black Americans throughout our nation’s history.

Juneteenth marks the anniversary of June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation finally reached the last group of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. It stands as both a celebration of freedom and a reminder of the ongoing work that remains to build a more just and equitable society.

As we reflect on the meaning of this day, the words of author and poet Maya Angelou continue to resonate: “We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike.” Her message speaks to the importance of empathy, understanding, and shared humanity — values that are deeply connected to the work we do every day at VNS Health.
