Childcare and Housing Resources

NYC Childcare. If you are interested in applying for free or low-cost childcare, first find out if you are eligible. There are several types of childcare programs available in the city, so consider your family’s needs and choose carefully.

For those who want to homeschool their children, here are NYC’s criteria and instructions for homeschooling and COVID-19 Updates to homeschooling policies.

PBS also offers a homeschooling resource list which can be found here: https://www.pbs.org/parents/thrive/homeschooling-resource-list.

NYC Food Assistance and Meal Distribution Programs

New York City is taking steps to make sure that every New Yorker has access to food. For information on all of the programs that are offered, go to NYC’s Food Assistance webpage.

The Pandemic Food Reserve Emergency Distribution (P-FRED) program distributes fresh and shelf-stable food to more than 400 COVID-response emergency feeding programs (“EFP”) that serve the public. Please click here for a list of all P-FRED locations by borough. New locations are being added regularly so please check this list frequently.

The Emergency Food Assistance Program (EFAP) provides funding to more than 500 community kitchens and food pantries citywide. If you need food, you can get help today at one of New York City’s food pantries, which provide groceries to cook at home, or community kitchens, which provide hot meals.

If you need to find an active food pantry near you, you can look it up on the Get Food NYC map.

You can also go here to see a List of Food Pantries and Community Kitchens.

The NYC Unity Project’s LGBTQ+ COVID-19 Online Guide has also compiled a list of food pantries and soup kitchens that have explicitly self-reported their desire to welcome LGBTQ community members. View that list here.

Home Assistance Programs

New York City has developed a list of resources for those who may be seeking additional assistance. Visit this website to learn about these resources. You can also text “COVID” to 692-692 for updates and information, or text “COVIDESP” to 692-692 for updates in Spanish.

NY State announced an emergency rental assistance program to help keep low-income families throughout New York in their homes. However, the COVID Rent Relief Program has now been closed. Households impacted by COVID who are still in need of rental assistance should call 1-844-691-7368 or visit otda.ny.gov for more information regarding the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance’s (OTDA) forthcoming, federally-funded Emergency Rental Assistance Program to provide rental subsidy to eligible households in New York State.
